When you return to sit the leaving certificate as an adult candidate there a number of steps to consider.
Registering to sit the Leaving Certificate
The Ordinary Closing date for External Applications is usually the end of January in the year of sitting examination.
If you want to sit the Leaving Certificate as an external candidate, you must apply through the State Examinations board. You can either apply and pay online or get a form from the Entries section of the State Examinations Commission and pay through a bank. External candidates who hold a current medical card do not have to pay the fee but are still liable for late fees if they apply after the deadline.
As a guideline in 2016 the fees payable to the SEC were:
- First time entry (3+ subjects) : €116
- First time entry (1 or 2 subjects) : €71
- Repeat entry (3+ subjects) : €326
- Repeat entry (2 subjects) : €211
- Repeat entry (1 subject) : €116
